Scapegoating 101

Espada knows that right now the village is united, but when the next inquisition comes and people are dragged out of their houses for interrogation on their missing people, someone will eventually talk.
Having the ability to point and say "She did it, then she disappeared" is important for this town. As the inquisitor pointed out once, "Espada" is just the Spanish word for sword - and in this day and age, changing your name can often be accomplished by just introducing yourself with a new one.
